Picnic with friends I
This vibrant, vertically oriented folk-art-inspired painting is on a rectangular piece of heavy textured paper with distinct deckled edges. The artwork features a bold, stylised botanical composition in flat matte colours with clean outlines and fine dot detailing.
The composition centres on large graphic floral and leaf motifs closely layered together. Near the top, there are stylised white and bright orange blossoms with yellow centres outlined in white dots. In the midground and foreground, a prominent tulip- or bud-like form in deep burnt orange and olive green dominates the centre. Lush oversized leaves in various shades of green (from sage to deep forest) curve upwards from the bottom, accompanied by a round solid orange circular element resembling a stylised fruit or bud.
The background is split into two distinct zones. The upper and left sections are a solid bright mid-blue sky tone while the lower right background introduces a playful contrast with horizontal earthy brown and off-white stripes.
The colour palette is rich and earthy yet high contrast, consisting of terracotta/burnt orange, deep olive and forest greens ochre yellow cream-white dark navy and a solid sky blue. The painting relies on flat opaque blocks of colour rather than blending or gradients. Fine white and yellow dots are purposefully used to texture the flower centres and trace the contours of select leaves, giving it a delicate hand-crafted folk or textile feel.
The medium is a completely matte texture of paint applied over thick fibrous handmade paper, giving the entire piece an organic tactile quality.
